Blackmagic Design Acquires EchoLab

Blackmagic Design today announced the acquisition of all assets of EchoLab Inc., one of the world's leading designers and manufacturers of production switchers. EchoLab has over 35 years of experience in designing and building production switchers since 1974.

Back in May of this year, EchoLab had announces that it was going out of business and liquidating its assests after a deal with Harris fell through. This is the second major purchase by Blackmagic, the first being the DaVinci back in 2009.

Apple Announces Updated Mac Pros with up to 12 processors

Apple announced today updates to their Mac Pro desktop computers. Most notable is the ability to configure the computer with up to 12 processors using two 2.93GHz 6-core "Westmere”" processors. The new “Westmere” processors offer 6-core or 12-core processing with 12MB of L3 cache and up to 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM. System now allow for 4, 6, 8 or 12 processor configurations.

 
Other changes include bumping the standard drive size from 640GB to 1TB and making the base graphics card the ATI Radeon HD 5770 w/1GB of GDDR5 memory, two Mini DisplayPorts, and one dual-link DVI port. Additionally 512GB SSD (solid state drives) are an option, providing ultra-fast file access. Oddly, Apple has stuck with USB 2.0 rather than moving to current spec of USB 3.0.
